Somatic Therapeutic Approaches
Somatic practices work with the concepts of poly vagal theory and the understanding that when we have endured a trauma or a highly stressful experience our nervous system is impacted and we are outside of our usual ability to cope. We may go into activated ‘fight or flight’ modes or more frozen states in order to cope.
Somatic practices build your capacity and tolerance for what you’re sensing and feeling. This helps you develop a sense of safety in your body. In sessions we integrate somatic techniques to support you to to remain connected in all experiences without becoming overwhelmed. These practices include body movement, breathwork, noticing the body and sensations within the body.
The act of purposefully paying attention helps us to stay present in the her and now. When we are more present we’ll be far better equipped to notice helping reveal unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that come up in response to challenging experiences or external triggers.
